Why Should Engineers Pursue An MBA?

A common predicament students find themselves in after graduating from engineering is whether or not they should pursue an MBA.

If you have specialized in civil, mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering there are a sizeable amount of careers opportunities in areas of energy, power, data science, and infrastructure. Better still, a large number of organizations that have huge manufacturing, distribution, and factory units are actually choosing engineering students with the relevant subject specialization over other graduates.

Your first instinct might be to seek a job that utilizes your own technical specialization. For instance, as a computer engineer you probably would be happy to work in any of the top IT giants such as Google or Infosys.

However, a career choice that seems to align with your academic background might over time become a place of cessation for growth and professional skills. This is where those with management skills have the upper hand because with that expertise it is much easier to advance in your field of work.
The way out of this mid-career lull would be possible if you are trained in a manner that allows you to blend your engineering acumen seamlessly into mainstream management roles.

Here are some advantages of an MBA after engineering:

1. Career growth
The corporate world is changing to accommodate and even welcome individuals with an MBA degree and an engineering background. With a managerial background, you are bound to be on the fast-track to higher supervisory roles in your career.

2. Management Proficiency
As an engineer, you possess a deep understanding of the technicalities of work. Your education has given you a scientific bend of mind which will benefit you. An MBA however, prepares you for tackling real world problems. You develop an understanding of the human element in business. Combined with your technical skills, transferable skills of communication, human resource management, enterprise management, and time management prepare you to excel in your career. All these together put you in a higher position of salary negotiation.

3. Business Insights
You gain a holistic perspective to work and work related problems. Often observation of business challenges is required from a macro level. Problem solving is far more complex and dynamic in a business environment, but as an engineer you are well-equipped with the tools of effective problem solving. With management education, you can exercise a heuristic approach of problem solving.

4. Personality Enhancement
MBA uses a mix of learning tools such as group discussions, projects, presentations, and industry visits. This gives you the chance to hone your personality, develop confidence, and learn to communicate well. These skills benefit you professionally and personally.

With the knowledge you acquire from an MBA, you graduate with skills of leadership, management, and entrepreneurship with experience that helps you stretch your cultural and intellectual boundaries.

Symbiosis International (Deemed University) is one of the most reputed B-schools in India where you can choose from MBA programmes in unconventional fields including information technology, infrastructure management, business analytics, and computer applications. You are required to take SNAP exam 2019, to apply to any of the colleges under the aegis of Symbiosis.
